The wisdom of the Lama

  1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
  2. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
  3. Follow the three Rs:
       Respect for self
       Respect for others and
       Responsibility for all your actions.
  4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
  5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
  6. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
  7. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
  8. Spend some time alone every day.
  9. Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.
  10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
  11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.
  12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
  13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.
  14. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.
  15. Be gentle with the earth.
  16. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.
  17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
  18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
  19. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.

The Current state of intelligence

There are two things that exemplify the level of ignorance and sometimes blatant stupidity in our society. The first are the applicants for American Idol and the second are people who leave comments on web sites. After reading some of the comments pertaining to George Orwell's "1984" I can't help but wonder - did we read the same book? I can't help but think that if we continue down the path of lowering the bar when it comes to education and common sense we are headed for a problem that we won't recover from, a problem that was illustrated in the movie "Idiocracy" (a funny movie, I might add). With the greatest tool for knowledge and learning at most people's finger tips it would be a great idea to spend some time reading something insightful than surfing for porn or sports stats...

2006

2006 is now becoming a series of distant memories strung together by 3-day weekends, day trips, seemingly endless days at the office and holidays. For us, it was a quiet year mostly because we were dealing with new challenges and trying to stay afloat in the neverending stream we call life. As I look back over 2006 there isn't a lot I can point to as monumental but it does seem that we survived a pretty busy year.

So the first rays of 2007 mark a year of Karen pouring herself into her dream job: The Oasis. I don't think I've ever seen Karen busier but I've also never seen her this happy. As I watch her grow as a business owner, manager and individual I continue to swell with pride - it serves as another example of how I found the perfect half to our whole. I'm sure 2007 will continue to challenge Karen but I know she will meet and exceed the crazy standards she sets for herself. She is, without a doubt, the love of my life and I'll be the first to admit I'm not that impressive without her...

As I look back over 2006 there's only a footnote that stands out for me, I got my brother back and in turn he brought along someone who we hope will become a sister-in-law... but the best part of 2006 was finding out I was going to be an Uncle. Though I never thought Jerry would beat me to having kids - I'll take it.

So there you have it - I don't know how 2007 will stack up but I'll embrace whatever comes my way. I hope that 2006 was memorable for you and that 2007 continues to bring goodness to you all...
